IANLS Business Meeting Budapest 2006: Minutes
Thirteenth International Congress of the International Association for Neo-Latin Studies, 2006 in Budapest, Hungary
BUSINESS MEETING of IANLS
HUNGARIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE, BUDAPEST
Thursday 10 August 2006
1. Approval of the minutes of the Business Meeting in Bonn, 7 August
2003
The minutes were approved, with the correction at 4. of the spelling of the name of Ingrid de Smet.
2. Report by the President, Jean-Louis Charlet.
The President recalled that he became vice-president of the IANLS at the same time as the Association began work to promote a closer cooperation with neo-Latin scholars in Eastern Europe; it was gratifying that this endeavour had borne fruit when Budapest became the venue of the Thirteenth Congress of IANLS. The President reported that Executive Committee had met in in Aix-en-Provence in July 2004 and in Budapest and Debrecen in September 2005, its principal work being to make preparations for the Congress in Budapest in 2006. In connection with the meeting in Aix a conference on cultural interaction between Eastern and Western Europe was held, and in connection with the meeting in Debrecen, László Havas organised the colloquium "Hercules neolatinus. Cultural exchanges in the Res publica litterarum". During the meeting in Debrecen a contest in neo-Latin poetry was held (the Camoena Pannonica). Participants were Fehér Bence, Rihmer Zoltan and Imre Flora, judges Karl August Neuhausen, Istvan Lazar and Jean-Louis Charlet.
A propos neo-Latin as a living language, the President read a passage from a letter of Hans G. Trüger, professor of microbiology: "The help of Neo-Latinists is strongly needed by biologists, especially in microbiology where the vast majority of microbes do not bear names yet. The naming of new biological taxa can to my experience best be done in a close cooperation between a biologist, preferably with some Latin knowledge, and a Latinist preferably with some knowledge of the pertinent rules of biological nomenclature. Neo-Latinists, the world community of biologists needs and would welcome your help! We would greatly appreciate if this letter could be circulated within the IANLS. Please, Neo-Latin scholars, if you are willing to cooperate, send me your name and address within the next three months. The list of willing Neo-Latinists shall be published then in the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology in order to spread this information between microbial taxonomists who are in need for Latin help …".
For support of the Budapest congress, the President thanked the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Culture and Education, the National Cultural Fund, the Budapest Historical Museum, the Aquincum Museum, the secretary of municipality of Obuda, the National Széchényi Library, Pegasus Limited, Brepols Publishers, the University and Municipality of Szeged, the National Historical Memorial Park of Opusztaszer. The President thanked the Second Vice-President, professor László Szörényi and his team, especially Enikö Békés and Gyöngyi Komlossy.
3. Report by the First Vice-President and Chair of the Advisory Board.
The First Vice-President reported that for the first time the members of the Advisory Board had been consulted by e-mail on issues relating to the organisation of our Association between meetings, as well as during the congresses.
At the meeting on the preceding Monday, the AB had discussed the financial organisation of the IANLS, especially regarding the system of national treasurers, the payment of the triennial membership fee of the Association and the payment to the organising committees of the IANLS congresses. The Executive Committee and Advisory Board suggested that the IANLS should move towards the establishment of a single account for the Association in the spiritual home of the IANLS in Belgium. Membership fees could be paid into this account, and it might act as a clearing house in the case of countries organising the congresses who could not provide an inexpensive form of payment. To reduce bank charges, the Association would offer the possibility of using Paypal though more traditional forms of payment would continue to exist. The Executive Committee and Advisory Board would then envisage changing the roles of the national treasurers to that of national coordinators, responsible for disseminating information and staying in contact with members.
Other important questions discussed had been:
- the plan to establish an international on-line anthology of Neo-Latin texts designed to be used as a teaching resource at first degree level. This received the approval of the Advisory Board, though much work will need to go into the planning of it. National groups might work together under the aegis of the IANLS;
- the enhancement of the visibility and appeal of the IANLS. Various suggestions were made: more information on the IANLS website, for example on the number of members of the Association, abstracts of the papers of the congresses, perhaps the texts of the plenary papers before their appearance in the Acta, contacts with national newspapers to publicise the activities of the Association were also discussed, and there was a role for national coordinators in disseminating information wherever possible;
- the encouragement of neo-Latin research amongst younger scholars and the possibility to seek funding for study scholarships;
- the use of the internet to provide information about publications on neo-Latin themes, bibliographical articles, perhaps in collaboration with Humanistica Lovaniensia.
The first Vice-President thanked the members of the Advisory Board for their dynamic participation in discussions, and wished them luck in fostering the activities of the IANLS over the next three years.
4. Report by the Secretary, Marianne Pade.
The Secretary reported that the association as usual had sent out the first two circular letters of the triennium, in close collaboration with the national treasurers, while the Third Circular has been distributed by the Hungarian Organizing committee. As was the case already in the triennium 2000-2003 the association had used e-mail as much as possible to communicate with members.
The Secretary furthermore reported that she had advertised the association and its activities to various yearbooks, e.g. Yearbook of International Organizations, and on net based lists of conference makers.
An important part of the Secretary's activities in the preceding triennium had been the reorganisation of the website of the Association, which now had a new and easy internet address, new design, and which increasingly functioned as a means of communication with members and non-members. The Secretary explained a number of features on the website, such as the page on conferences and the neo-Latin scholars' list which was regularly up-dated by the members themselves.
5. Report by the Treasurer, Jan Papy.
The Treasurer's Financial Report was divided in three parts this time. The first part concerned the balances of the National Treasurers (i.e. for Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, United Kingdom and the USA). The second part concerned the balance of the General Treasurer. The results for the triennium 2003-2006 are a positive balance of 1758,87 Euro.
6. Report by the Chair of Publications, Rhoda Schnur.
RS reported that the volume of the proceedings of the Bonn-meeting, although not actually finished, would appear in September 2006. The delay was caused by the indexing process of the publishers. RS thanked Perrine Galand Hallyn, Craig Kallendorf, Joaquin Pasqual Barrea, Antonio Iurilli, Hugo Tucker, and Hermann Wiegand for their work as editors of the volume.
She also thanked Roy Rukkila from the Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. She informed the meeting that all speakers would receive detailed information about preparing their paper for publication in the Budapest Acta.
Editors of the Budapest Acta will be: Howard Norland, David Money, Amadeo di Francesco with L. Szörényi, Karl Enenkel, and Joaquin Pascal Barrea
7. Election of Officers (President, First Vice-President, Secretary)
Stella Revard explained the function and composition of the Nominating Committee and the election procedure; she presented the two candidates for First Vice-President, Julia Haig Gaisser and Minna Skafte Jensen.
After voting had taken place and the votes had been counted, the committee of the ballot announced that Minna Skafte Jensen was elected new first Vice-President.
8. Announcement of the Fourteenth International Congress of IANLS in
Uppsala, Sweden in 2009 and Selection of Second Vice-President for the
Congress.
Hans Helander presented the plans for the 2009 meeting in Uppsala.
9. Proposals for the Fifteenth International Congress of IANLS in 2012.
Karl Enenkel proposed Leiden as host for the Fifteenth International Congress of IANLS in 2012, and presented its university as a historical centre of neo-Latin scholarship as well as having the infrastructure to host large conferences, and the physical surroundings to make them attractive.
10. Proposal for a new financial organisation of the IANLS, including a change in the functions of the national treasurers.
PF and JP presented the plans to set up a single, central account for the association, placed in Leuven, which could be used either directly or via Paypal. The aim would be to facilitate transfers, minimize transfer fees, and make it easier for the EC to ascertain who are actually paid-up members. The proposal was passed.
11. Proposal for affiliation with the Renaissance Society of America
PF recorded that the IANLS had decided to work towards an association with the RSA and explained the advantages of such an association: access to their membership, right to organize panels, and participation in their board. PF pointed out that the association would not cost the IANLS money. The proposal was discussed by the members. The proposal was passed.
12. Announcement of plan to set up an international on-line anthology of neo-Latin texts for teaching purposes.
PF and MP presented the plan: the aim would be to have a corpus of neo-Latin texts on the IANLS web-site that should comprise works of both international and local importance, preferably of a length suitable for teaching purposes, and accompanied by introduction, translation, glosses and other pedagogical tools. It is planned to apply for financial support for the project.
13. Vote of thanks.
JC recalled the members of the association that had passed away since the last meeting, and thanked ex- and present officers, the OC and especially Enikö Békés.
14. Other Business.
