The New Century Edition of the Works of Emanuel Swedenborg

The New Century Edition of the Works of Emanuel Swedenborg (NCE) is a long-term Neo-Latin research and translation project that, since the year 2000, has been publishing a series of fresh, contemporary annotated translations of eighteenth-century Neo-Latin texts by Emanuel Swedenborg. Each volume contains a substantial scholarly introduction and hundreds of carefully researched annotations.

Power and Passion, Prince and People. Justus Lipsius' Monita et exempla politica (1605) as a Bridge between Political Philosophy and the Ideal of the Christian Ruler (KULeuven, October 2005 - December 2009)

In order to gain a sufficiently broad view of the Monita et exempla politica (1605) and, more generally, of Lipsius' political thought and the way the work and Lipsius' ideas were received in early modern Europa, Marijke Janssens will prepare a critical edition of the Monita et exempla politica, together with an English translation and an historical, philological and literary commentary, under the supervision of Prof. J. Papy, while Erik de Bom will study the reception of the Monita in the Low Countries in the first half of the 17th century, under supervision of Prof. T. Van Houdt.

Diarium Surinamicum quod sub itinere exotico conscripsit Daniel Rolander: Editio Princeps, James Dobreff, Editor

The 699-page manuscript Diarium Surinamicum describes the Suriname expedition of Daniel Rolander (1723-1793). Rolander drafted it during the expedition, completing it in 1765. Until recently its contents were almost completely unknown. This poster illustrates Diarium Surinamicum's wide range of topics from botany and ethnography to racial conflicts. It includes new Genera and species, the inhumane treatment of slaves and examples of Rolander's literary talents. This first edition brings to light a treasure trove of skillfully executed narratives, detailed observations and descriptions – a new window into a critical junction of the Old and New Worlds.

Interesting Words in Swedenborg's Latin

Although the Latin vocabulary of Emanuel Swedenborg is often very repetitious in explanation of core theology, his vocabulary is extraordinarily large as he takes words from a wide variety of disciplines to explain ideas through analogies. This poster will simply present some interesting words Swedenborg uses in their context in Vera Christiana Religio (which I recently completed editing), show other NeoLatin texts where they may be seen, and anything my research has found about their etymology or forms. These words are uncommon in NeoLatin and may be of interest to other scholars.

Account books of prince Zygmunt Jagiellonczyk

The account books of prince Zygmunt – later king of Poland (1506-1548) – were written between 1499-1506. The Hungarian-related part of the text were published by Adorján Divéky in 1914. The other – and not neglectable the greater – part of the source, which provides usufull information for investigation on political-, cultural-, and numerous other fields of history connecting to medieval Europe, is unedited. The presenting research-project is in progress since 2002. Its aim is to publish the complete text of the corpus – which is preserved in the State Archive of Warsaw – within a few years.

Charters of the Angevin Era

The Charters of the Angevin Era is currently the largest-scale source publishing undertaking of Medieval Studies in Hungary. Its aim is to process in approximately 70 volumes all the surviving archival sources relating to contemporary Hungary from the period 1301-1387. The number of documents in the volumes will be about 45 000. The editors prepare short excerpts of all documents, which will contain all the relevant pieces of information preserved by them. This will provide a new insight into an important part of Hungarian and European history on the basis of written, Latin sources for researchers in Hungary and abroad.

Neo Latin and the University of Ulster, N. Ireland

Following the historic "Good Friday Agreement", universities on both sides of the border in Ireland were encouraged to engage in joint inter-disciplinary projects. One of these projects has been the production of an on-line English translation of the Commentarius Rinuccinianus, a Counter Reformation Latin text of over 3500 pages. The translation launched in the summer of 2008 with the support of the governments of the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain. Translation of other Irish Neo-Latin texts is under way and the University of Ulster intends to develop a nucleus of Irish Neo-Latin sources from the Early Modern period.
